Medication services

Extensive range of medication dispensing services

Parkside Pharmacy provides an extensive range of medication dispensing services such as general pharmacy dispensing, special foods, palliative medications, clozapine, speciality medications, hospital level care imprest stock (on-site supply including pain killers, saline, antiseptic and laxatives). We provide pharmacy and general sales medicines including complementary medications.

Unit dose dispensing

We provide our partner residential care facilities with the Medico Pak medication packaging system. This system provides weekly, monthly, short course and PRN packaging – a range of options to suit each facility’s medication requirements. We use the Medico Alpaca robotic system to increase the accuracy and safety of medication packaging.

Electronic charting and administration

We use the 1Chart electronic charting system to help residential care facilities in administer medication to residents. Electronic charting improves safety and allows an efficient medication management work flow. We work closely with facilities to ensure they get the most out of electronic charting.

Delivery of daily medication orders

Parkside Pharmacy delivers daily medication orders to Retirement Villages at no additional charge, and can deliver urgent medications to facilities at a cost.

After-hours service

Our after-hours emergency medication and advice service is available to our partner residential care facilities.

Pharmacy Services

Weekly visit by a pharmacist

A Parkside Pharmacy pharmacist visits each partner residential care facility every week. The pharmacist delivers regular weekly packed controlled drugs, collects expired, discontinued and unneeded medications, and discusses medication-related queries with onsite facility health staff members.

Medication reviews

We can provide the Medication Therapy Assessment (MTA) service. This is a clinical review of a resident’s medication. This is funded by some District Health Boards but can also be provided as a charged service (cost varies depending on level of service required). The Ministry of Health has a key objective to reduce polypharmacy (excessive medication used by one person), and MTAs can help primary care organisations such as residential care facilities achieve these objectives.

Reporting

Parkside Pharmacy can provide reporting on the medication residents are using, to help facility target patients who are at high risk of falls, using too many medications (polypharmacy), or could benefit from antibiotic reconciliation (reducing the number of antibiotics taken while still getting results). We can provide other reports as requested.

Staff education

Our pharmacists can educate residential care facility staff on medications and how best to administer them.

Advice regarding issues arising from audits

We can give advice on how to address issues you have found in self-audits and Ministry of Health compliance audits.
